How a New Mobile Safety App and Mississippi Alcohol Rehab Centers Are Addressing Substance Abuse on College Campus

A new smartphone app has been developed to allow students and staff at the University of Mississippi report non-emergency tips that could improve campus safety. The app allows campus community members to report assaults, stalking, and any incidents involving drug and alcohol abuse. This app, along with efforts being made on behalf of local law enforcement and Mississippi alcohol rehab centers, will help improve public safety for Ole Miss students while reducing local substance abuse rates.

If you’re struggling with substance abuse, understand that you don’t have to overcome addiction on your own without help. Call our confidential helpline at 888-414-2380 to learn more about rehab centers in Mississippi that can help you overcome dependency and addiction.

Using the App To Improve Campus Safety

Mobile Safety App

LiveSafe provides a sense of security to students.

The app, called LiveSafe, partnered with the University of Mississippi to offer campus students, staff, and visitors a way to communicate directly with UM safety officials and prevent crimes before they occur. The app is available for iOS and Android mobile devices, and offers real-time functionality so those in distress can contact help immediately in times of need.

Users of LiveSafe can attach photos, videos, and audio clips when submitting tips, which can be anonymous at the user’s discretion. As soon as tips are submitted through the app, the appropriate campus department responds based on the type of tip reported. Users can even chat through the app in situations where communication is crucial to public safety.

LiveSafe also offers a feature called SafeWalk, which allows users to virtually walk friends and family members home using GPS technology. Elizabeth Romary, senior international studies and Spanish major at Ole Miss, says it’s nice to know friends and family members can keep an eye on her when walking long distances at night by herself. The app was recently tested and evaluated for its safety benefits, and considered invaluable by most Ole Miss users.

Addressing Substance Abuse at Rehab Centers

UM is featuring the LiveSafe mobile app on its UMatter website — a support site for students and staff who need help in times of distress. The UMatter website features links to campus programs that help those who struggle with substance abuse, and connects these individuals with addiction treatment centers that can help.

Rehab centers throughout Mississippi offer programs that can effectively treat all substance abuse problems, including alcohol abuse and opioid addiction. Rehab centers even offer different treatments that can be tailored to each patient’s unique needs. For instance, those who struggle with drug or alcohol dependency can turn to medications that allow them to safely withdraw from these substances, or undergo detoxification using natural methods of exercise, massage, and nutrition.

Ole Miss students who suffer from alcohol abuse can overcome physical dependency and address underlying causes of addiction at nearby Mississippi alcohol rehab centers. Not only does connecting addicts with addiction treatment programs improve public safety, but it helps students get their lives and futures back on the right track.
