Coastal Residents Can Now Drop Off Unused Opioids and Seek Treatment at Mississippi Rehab Centers

Residents who live throughout Southern Mississippi can now drop off unused prescription drugs at several locations to improve the state’s opioid epidemic. This prevention and awareness effort, which is sponsored by the DEA, welcomes all drugs with no questions asked.

In addition to preventing friends and family from accessing unused painkillers at home, the drug take-back program gives those who struggle with addiction another chance at seeking treatment at Mississippi rehab centers.

Curbing the State’s Opioid Epidemic

Some local police departments in Mississippi now have drug disposal boxes.

Earlier this fall, police and sheriff’s departments in Long Beach, Pascagoula, and George and Pearl River Counties featured drug collection boxes at headquarters and nearby locations. Police departments in Gulfport and Biloxi made drug collection boxes accessible in their lobbies all year long.

These law enforcement agencies are encouraging local residents to bring by unused pills, capsules, and patches to prevent friends and family — especially youth — from taking or selling unused painkillers.

According to the DEA, most cases of addiction begin at home with painkillers found in the medicine cabinet. Children and teens can access these unused drugs, then either use them or sell them to make a profit. As addiction worsens, users continue to seek harder, more potent drugs to chase an intense, ongoing euphoric high — eventually leading to overdose, coma, and/or death.

Not only do Southern Mississippi’s drug take-back events prevent opioid addiction, but they also raise awareness about the epidemic, which is affecting everyone in the U.S. The more educated Mississippi residents can stay about opioids and addiction, the better success the state will have with lowering its overdose rates.

Seeking Addiction Treatment at Opioid Rehab Centers

Opioids alter a person’s brain chemistry in a manner that drives addiction and dependency. When users become dependent, they often end up seeking stronger, more potent drugs to achieve more intense highs. In many cases, users accidentally overdose by mixing heroin with other opioids, or by taking stronger doses.

Opioid addicts who try to stop using on their own often experience severe cravings and painful withdrawal symptoms. Most individuals who quit using abruptly without help end up relapsing to relieve their symptoms. Unfortunately, many opioid addicts are unaware they can get help from one of several affordable nearby drug rehab centers that specialize in treating opioid dependency.

Opioid rehab centers offer patients medications that help them quit using opioids without experiencing cravings or withdrawal symptoms. During rehab, physicians work closely with patients to ensure they’re receiving the proper dosage of these medications without being at risk for relapse. Over time, doctors slowly taper patients off medications so they can leave rehab addiction-free.

If you’re struggling with opioid addiction and live in Mississippi, understand you don’t have to fight addiction on your own.
